This report argues that the UN is unlikely to reach its gender goals because it is not fully implementing its own two-pronged approach of increasing the number of women in peacekeeping operations and integrating a gender perspective within its missions.

Regional cooperation for disaster preparedness and relief in Central Asia was the topic of a July 3rd roundtable discussion held in Almaty, Kazakhstan that brought together representatives from the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and included officials from emergency services from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran, as well as international experts on civil-military coordination for disaster risk reduction (DRR).

In a new volume which challenges traditional peacebuilding frameworks in Africa, seventeen chapter authors of the book Peacebuilding, Power, and Politics in Africa, examine the tensions in the interaction between local and global actors engaged in building peace on the continent. The book, a joint collaboration between Cambridge University and the Centre for Conflict Resolution in South Africa, was introduced at the International Peace Institute on July 2, 2013 by co-editor Dr. Devon Curtis.

Much has been learned from the experiences of both countries and international development partners working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were declared in 2000. In particular, country experience has revealed the importance of citizen security for achieving sustainable development, underscoring the importance of including armed violence prevention and reduction in the post-2015 MDGs framework.

On June 28th, the IPI Vienna Office hosted an expert roundtable on energy and security in the Caspian, Caucasus, and Central Asia. The roundtable focused on the region around the Caspian Sea, which is potentially the world’s third largest oil producing region, with reserves of more than 200 billion barrels of oil and 800 billion cubic feet of gas.

The new website, www.providingforpeacekeeping.org, includes a publicly-available database of all uniformed contributions to UN peacekeeping operations; thematic papers analyzing various elements of force generation; and country profiles examining why countries contribute to UN peacekeeping operations.
