On April 10th, IPI, together with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)–USA, hosted a policy forum that focused on the promotion of greater compliance with international humanitarian law (IHL) for a better protection of civilians and improved effectiveness of humanitarian aid, and attempted to provide some recommendations to improve respect for IHL in todays' most violent conflicts.

On April 7th, IPI, together with the Permanent Mission of Italy, hosted a seminar focusing on advances in technologies and other innovations in peacekeeping that have the potential to make operations more effective and adaptable as well as make peacekeepers safer and more efficient.

International Peace Institute President Terje Rød-Larsen inaugurated IPI’s new Middle East Regional Office with a recognition of the area’s critical importance to the world and the rapid political changes underway in the countries of the region, and he asserted that IPI has an “important role” to play there.

As sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council have become increasingly sophisticated and targeted, they have also become more and more difficult to implement effectively. Currently there are fourteen active UN sanctions regimes. Among them are the sanctions regimes on Iran and North Korea.

In an SRSG Series event on March 26th, IPI hosted Derek Plumbly, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL), who discussed the current situation in Lebanon, particularly focusing on the impact of the Syrian crisis on the country, and the work of the United Nations to address the political, security, and humanitarian challenges there.

The ten Africans and three African-Americans who have won the Nobel Peace Prize comprise a complex group of peace leaders, said Adekeye Adebajo, Executive Director of Centre for Conflict Resolution, on March 25th. He spoke as part of a panel at the International Peace Institute’s launch of Africa’s Peacemakers, Nobel Laureates of African Descent, edited by Mr. Adebajo.
