At a roundtable discussion at IPI’s Vienna office on February 22, Ambassador Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), underlined the need for new thinking and new approaches to cooperation in the region.

This report stems from a roundtable meeting held at IPI Vienna in May and featured representatives from the governments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia, who in 2011 produced a regional accord to address the lingering problem of displacement nearly 20 years after the Balkan wars precipitated a crisis of refugees and IDPs.

Panel Discussions - May 25, 2012
On May 25th, the IPI Vienna Office hosted an informal meeting on “Regional Solutions for Displacement: Lessons Learned from the Western Balkans.” The workshop brought together senior government representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia for a unique opportunity to reflect on the process of finding regional solutions to the problem of forced displacement in the Western Balkans.

“Don’t be afraid to say there is an aggressor here,” Swanee Hunt, Chair of the Institute for Inclusive Security, told an IPI audience while discussing her new book, Worlds Apart: Bosnian Lessons for Global Security. Ms. Hunt served as the US Ambassador to Austria between 1993-97 and hosted negotiations and meetings focused on stabilizing the neighboring Balkan states.
